Swans 29th May, 2023 Teatro Duse, Bologna Lineage: Xiaomi 12 Lite Internal Mic -> WAV 24/48 -> Tracking, cutting and fades (Audition) -> FLAC 16/44.1 Setlist: Intro / The Beggar The Hanging Man Band Introduction Ebbing The Memorious Cathedrals of Heaven No More of This Cloud of Unknowing / Birthing About the recording: This is my first (unplanned!) recording and as you can see from the lineage, this whole recording was a last minute idea I came up with a day before the gig. Given the circumstances the recording is listenable, but when the band started going haywire it starts to suffer from clipping so the sound is not really detailed when things start becoming loud. There are some stereo imbalances throughout the concert: when we were seated during the intro and The Beggar my phone mic was sticking out of my pocket but when we stood up when they started playing The Hanging Man it was covered by my shirt thus changing how the recording sounds. I really hope someone will share a better recording of this date. About the night itself: Wow, what a night that was, my ears were still ringing the day after the gig. The whole band really gave their 110% and played longer than those played on previous dates. Sadly I didn't record the Norman Westberg set since by the time I got to the venue he was playing the last notes, too bad. This was my first Swans concert ever and to say that I was thrilled to see them is an understatement. I was genuinely curious to see how this new Swans incarnation would have sounded and I was afraid I would be disappointed... Boy how I was wrong. The band started soft with just Gira and his guitar before the whole band joined in a mayhem of chaos and noise, every snare hit seemed like a firecracker exploding. I will never forget how Phil Puleo destroyed two drum sticks in the span of fifteen minutes: the sight of the wood chops flying in the air is an image burned forever in my mind. The Hanging Man started and Gira invited us the stand up and get closer to the stage (we were inside a theater with numbered seats!!), so it was strange to see in a theater people standing up and dancing during this number. Like the previous dates they played a new song called "Birthing" (as stated by Gira himself when asked by a fan), the two song's climaxes are some of the powerful thing I ever heard, the recording can't do any justice to them, every beat felt like a shockwave through your whole body. After the concert Gira did the usual signing session so we had the opportunity to talk a little bit with him and get some merch signed by him. Take care, samples in the comments.
